Oak Ridge Elementary School is a welcoming community of learners located in Lower Salford Township in the southern part of Souderton Area School District. We are dedicated to providing a loving learning environment for our students that inspires, fosters independence, and enriches thinking so that they can successfully face the challenges of life. We ended a great week with an Owl Time Assembly led by some of our fifth grade Wise Owls. They taught us about the various branches of the military in honor of Veterans Day. Fourth graders shared what they learned on their trip to Peace Valley Park and taught us about animals that live in Pennsylvania. Overall, it was a great assembly. On Friday, October 25th, we ended the day by celebrating our Fun Run with a Popcorn Party and a Special Edition of News From The Nest (link below). We raised over $38,000.00 for our school. Again, Thank you for the tremendous support. This money will go towards funding our Home and School events over the next few years as well as towards a new shed that will store recess and Flight Time equipment. What a great day we had! Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped with our Fun Run and to those who came out to cheer on the kids. Thanks to Mr. Kelly for keeping the event lively and the kids moving! We couldn’t have asked for a better day. We had a great Owl Time Assembly at the end of the day. We learned about our Character Trait of the month and heard about the good things happening in our school. Home and School joined us at the end to Kick Off our Race of Champions Fun Run Fund Raiser. The kids will come home today with a lanyard to register. We had a great day at Oak Ridge! We started out with our first Fun Friday of the year. These are fun activities each Friday that build classroom teamwork and school spirit. Today, Mrs. Irish’s and Miss David’s classes won their classroom Owls by getting all the items from our classroom scavenger hunt to the office first. We also had our first Home and School Sundae Bar of the year, which was a huge hit! Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with Sundae Bar, Jump Rope Club and Kindergarten/1st grade lunch. We had a great week that included practicing our safety drills and reviewing safety procedures in special areas. We will start Monday by reviewing and practicing what to do in case of an emergency during lunch time. We had a great week at Oak Ridge, topped off with an awesome First Responders Assembly. The kids learned about our local first responders and the role they play in our communities. They also were able to see their vehicles and hear about the special features. I was very proud of our students’ behavior on this hot afternoon. We’ve had two great weeks to start the year and are ready for our big celebration tonight. A big THANK YOU goes to our Home and School for organizing tonight’s Bash. Five of the books that an elementary student reads in the summer can count toward their goal of reading 25 – 30 books in the next school year. In order to meet the standard for proficient readers, students need to read at least 25 books each year. We had our last Owl Time Assembly this afternoon and our kindergarteners did a great job sharing. We also ended the assembly by letting the students know they were getting their yearbooks when they returned to class. What a fun and busy day we had at Oak Ridge! Our third grade headed to the zoo for a field trip, fourth graders presented their biography projects, and Home and School hosted a Sundae Bar at lunch. At Oak Ridge's annual Lip Sync, children from kindergarten through 5th grade create and perform acts. There is also a teacher act and a 5th grade finale! Watch the Oak Ridge Lip Sync!
Over the past two years we have had therapy dogs visit two of our learning support classrooms throughout the year. The teachers and the district saw a variety of benefits from this program that could be offered to the whole school, so we applied for a grant to get our own therapy dog. I am excited to share that the district was awarded the grant, so we will be sharing a therapy dog with the High School. The construction is going very smoothly. On Monday they are beginning Phase 2, which includes the gym. This will cause us to shift our Parent Drop Off and Pick Up lines further down the sidewalk. It will also require the pickup students to come through the lobby as the gym entrance will be blocked off. We appreciate your patience as we navigate the new procedures. There have been a few questions about how we are handling the eclipse on Monday. We won’t be doing any special viewings with the kids, but teachers will be discussing the eclipse, and many will be visiting some of the websites tracking the event. If you would like to sign your child out to experience the event as a family, please just send a note in with your child on Monday. The dismissal will be excused. I am very excited to share that Oak Ridge is about to get a Face Lift. You may have noticed the bricks falling off the ‘front’ side of our building. In the opening to this week’s News From The Nest I explain to the kids that when we return from break the construction will be under way (weather permitting).
