Volunteer

The Souderton Area School District values the important work done by the numerous community and parent volunteers who assist students and staff in our schools. In order to ensure the safety and security of all students, Board Policy #916, "Community Volunteers," outlines safety requirements for community volunteers. The policy requires certain volunteers to obtain certifications/background checks in order to volunteer in District schools.

A volunteer is an adult, whose role is more than that of a visitor, who voluntarily offers a service to the district without receiving compensation from the district. A volunteer is not a school employee.

All prospective volunteers shall complete and submit the SASD Community Volunteer Registration and Disclosure Statement, as either a parent/guardian or non-guardian/community member.

Guest Volunteers

A Guest Volunteer is an adult who voluntarily provides a service to the district, without compensation, who: (1) works directly under the supervision and direction of a school administrator, a teacher or other member of the school staff; and (2) has no responsibility for the care, supervision, guidance or control of children. Examples include, but are not limited to, volunteering to assist in classroom celebrations, school assemblies, or school concerts; reading to students; collecting tickets at sporting events; working concession stands; participating in "Career Day", etc.

Certifications: Guest Volunteers shall be required to be screened through the District's Raptor® system.

Position Volunteer

A Position Volunteer is an adult volunteering in an unpaid position with a school or a program, activity or service, as a person who has routine interaction with children and may have responsibility for the care, supervision, guidance or control of children for their welfare. Examples include, but are not limited to, field trip chaperones, tutors, coaches, activity advisor, recess or library aides, etc.

Certifications: Positions Volunteers shall be required to obtain and submit the Act 34 Criminal History Report, the Act 151 Child Abuse Clearance Statement, and the Federal Criminal History Record (Fingerprint).

Exception: A volunteer who completes the Waiver of Federal Criminal History Report Requirement shall not be required to obtain this clearance. Such volunteers must affirm the following statement: "I affirm that I have been a resident of this Commonwealth during the entirety of the previous ten-year period and that I am not disqualified from service based upon a conviction of an offense under §6344 of Act 134." Program Volunteers shall be required to renew these clearances every 60 months.

Tuberculosis (TB) Testing: Position Volunteers who volunteer more than ten (10) hours per week shall be required to receive a TB test within three months of their initial appointments.
